Non-Ductile Concrete
The owner world in California has been plagued by deficient designs until the late 1970's, non-ductile construction methodologies were used until then, which crumble under the threat of extreme seismic activity. Unfortunately, these buildings tend to be the largest in buildings in concentrated areas that resulted from large population booms of their respective areas.
With Zenith's experience in the concrete and seismic market, we're able to bring our two unique expertise to help owners, contractors, and developers navigate the world of seismic upgrades, code/occupancy chance triggering retrofits, and local jurisdictions own imposed ordinance to seismically retrofit these buildings. In LA alone, the city has tagged 1700 buildings, of which only 1/8th have begun the process. Some will be torn down, but most will be retrofitted.
Concrete solutions aren't the only way to retrofit a NDC building. There have been developments in fiber wrap, sometimes referred to as FRP, as well as, steel bracing components to help the shifting diaphragms. In these instances though, sometimes adding shear strength in the way of added concrete blocks or even shotcrete is also adequate.
Zenith has completed over 600 retrofits and bring our expertise to your challenging situation to propose the fastest, safest, and most cost effective way to retrofit your non-compliant building.
